Parasathula Goshtinumdina (పరసతుల గోష్ఠినుండిన)

Composer: Baddena Bhupaludu (AD 1220-1280). He was also known as Bhadra Bhupala. C.P. Brown. He was a Chola prince and was a Vassal under the Kakatiya empress Rani Rudrama Devi during the thirteenth century. He was a pupil of Tikkana, the greatest writer in Telugu. If we assume that the Sumatee Satakam was indeed written by Baddena, it would rank as one of the earliest Satakams in TeluguMore...

పద్యం:
పరసతుల గోష్ఠినుండిన
పురుషుఁఢు గాంగేయుఁడైన భువినిందవడున్,
బరసతి సుశీలయైనను,
బరుసంగతినున్న నింద పాలగు సుమతీ.

తాత్పర్యం:
బ్రహ్మచర్య వ్రతముగల భీష్ముడైనప్పటికినీ,పరకాంతల ప్రసంగములో నున్నచో అపకీర్తి పాలగును.అట్లే,మంచిగుణముగల స్త్రీయైననూ పరపురుషుని సహవాసము గల్గియున్నచో అపకీర్తి పాలగును.

Poem:
Parasathula goshtinumdina
Purushuaodu gaamgeyuaodaina bhuvinimdhavadun,
Barasathi sushilayainanu,
Barusamgathinunna nimdha paalagu sumathi.

Meaning:
Even Bheeshma, who took a vow of celibacy, if spends time in the discussion with outside women, will lose his good name. Similarly, even if a woman is righteous, if she spends time with an unrelated man, she will lose her good name.

Devrata was the eldest of Kind Shantanu of the Bharat dynasty took life-long vow of celibacy. When King Shantanu wished to marry Matsyagandhi, fisher woman, her father asks him to promise the crown to the son born to him and matsyagandhi. To fufil his father’s desire, Devrata takes a vow of celibacy, which disqualifies him to the crown and hence gets the name – Bheeshma.
