His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. శక్యో వారయుతం జలేన హుతభుక్ఛత్రేణ సూర్యాతపో |
నాగోన్ద్రో నిశితాఙ్కు శేన దణ్డేన గౌర్గర్దభః ||
వ్యాధిర్భేషజసఙ్గ్రపైంశ్చ వివిధైర్మస్త్ర ప్రయోగైర్విషం |
సర్వస్యౌషధమస్తి శాస్త్ర విహితం మూర్ఖస్య నాస్త్యౌషధమ్ ||
తాత్పర్యం:
నిప్పును ఆర్పడానికి నీరు, ఎండవేడిమిని ఆపడానికి గొడుగు, మదిమ్చిన ఏనుగును అదుపు చెయడానికి అంకుశం, ఎద్దు – గాడిద వంటి జంతువుల్ని అదిలించడానికి కర్ర, నానావిధ రోగాలకు పలురకాల ఔషధాలు, పాము విషాన్ని హరించడానికి మంత్రాలు ఎన్నెన్నో ఉపయుక్తమని శాస్త్రాలు చెప్పాయి. కాని, మూర్ఖుని మూఢత్వగాఢత పోగొట్టగల మందు ఏదీ ఏ శాస్త్రాల్లోనూ లేదు. మూఢత్వానికి విరుగుడే లేదని భర్తృహరి నిర్థారించేశాడు ఏనాడో.

Vyaadhirbheshajasaggrapaimshcha Vividhairmasthra Prayogairvisham |
Sarvasyaushadhamasthi Shaasthra Vihitham Moorkhasya Naasthyaushadham ||
Meaning:
water will control fire, an umbrella provides shade from hot sun, a raging elepnat can be controlled with a spear, domestic animals like ox and donkey can be controlled with a stick. There are mecines to cure one of illness. There are mantras as remedy for snakes’ bite. But there is no means to cure a vain man of his vanity.
