His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. జాతిర్యాతు రసాతలం గుణగుణ స్తత్రాప్యధో గచ్ఛతాత్ |
శీలం శైలతటాత్పత్వభిజనస్సన్దహ్యతాం వహ్నినా ||
శౌర్యే వైరిణి వజ్రమాశు నిపతత్వర్థో అతు నః కేవలం
యైనై కేన వినా గుణాస్తృణ వప్రాయాస్సమస్తా ఇమే ||
తాత్పర్యం:
కేవలం ధనమే ప్రధానంగా భావించేవారు – ఇలా అనుకుంటారంట ! …………. పాతాళానికి జాతి గౌరవం దిగిజారిపోయినా పోవుగాక ! సద్గుణాలు ఆ పాతాళానికంటే అడుగంటినా పతనమౌగాక ! శీలం పర్వతాల మీంచి దొర్లి పడిపోవు గాక ! వంశం / కులం తగలడి పోవుగాక ! పిడుగులు పడి శౌర్యం మటుమాయమై పోవుగాక ! మాకేంటి ? డబ్బు ఒక్కటుంటే చాలు ! పై చెప్పబడిన లోపాలు అన్నీ సర్దుకుంటాయి. కులం – శీలం – జాతి – గుణం ఇవన్నీ ద్రవ్యం లేనపుడు గడ్డిపోచకంటే హీనం.

Meaning:
People who assume that money is all that is important think this way, “Let the name of the race go down to hades, let all good qualities get destroyed beyond hades, let good behavior slip off a mountain, let the clan and caste be destroyed, let courage be hit by thunders, the only thing that matters if money.Once a person has money, all others will fall in place”
