His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. యుద్ధాత్రానిజఫాలపట్టలిఖితం స్తోకం మహద్వా ధనం
తత్ప్రాప్నోతి మరుస్తలే పి నితరాం మేరౌ చ నాతో ధికం |
తద్ధీరో భవ విత్తవత్సు కృపణాం వృత్తిం వృథా మా కృథాః
కూపే పశ్య పయోని ధావపి ఘటో గృహ్ణాతి తుల్యం జలమ్ ||
తాత్పర్యం:
ఎందుకంటే …. తన నుదుట రాసిపెట్టినంత ధనం కొద్దిగానో – గొప్పగానో ఆవ్యక్తి ఏ ప్రదేశంలో ఉన్నప్పటికీ తప్పకుండా పొందుతాడు. దైవం ఆ విధమైన కాలానుకూలాత అప్పటికి అలా కలిగిస్తుంది. మహా మేరు శిఖరం మీద కుర్చున్నా అంతకంటే అధికంగా పొందలేడు అతడు. కాబట్టి …. దనవంతుల్ని చూసి, ” అయ్యో నాకు ధనం లేదే” అని ఖేదపడడం వృధా. భావిలో ముంచినా సముద్రంలో ముంచినా కుండలో పట్టేది ఆ కడివెడు నీళ్ళే ! ఎంత ప్రాప్తమని లిఖితమో అంతే ! తృప్తి ముఖ్యం.

Thathpraapnothi Marusthale Pi Nitharaam Merau Cha Naatho Dhikam |
Thadhdheero Bhava Viththavathsu Krupanaam Vruththim Vruthaa Maa Kruthaah
Koope Pashya Payoni Dhaavapi Ghato Gruhnaathi Thulyam Jalam ||
Meaning:
If it is decided in one’s destiny, then one will procure the wealth wherever one is. The Higher Power will always guide a man towards his destiny. But even by sitting on the peak of the mountain Meru, one cannot get what one is not destined. So it is better to remember that a pot can carry only it’s full even if immersed in an ocean.
