Composer: Bhartruhari a King of Ujjain, Bhartruhari was the elder step brother of his more renowned sibling, Vikramaditya. His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. ఆత్మవివేచన గలవాడిని అతడు బుద్దిహీనుడని దూషించగలడు. తేజోవంతుడిని గర్విష్ఠి అని ముద్ర వేస్తాడు. సభాప్రియ వచన నైపుణ్యం అతనికి వదరుబోతుదనంగా తోస్తుంది. చివరకు తనకు ఇంపుగా మాట్లాడే వాడ్ని సైతం దీనుడని భావించడం దుర్జనునికే చెల్లింది. ఇతరులు ఎంత గుణవంతులైనా వారిలో దుర్జనులకు దోషాలే అన్నీ కన్పిస్తాయి.

A wicked man treats everything with contempt. He calls a shy man stupid; a sage will be treated like a boastful liar. He thinks a clean person is just showy and a courageous man as an unsympathizing one. He blames an introspective man to be unwise; a skilled man as vain; a good orator as a blabber mouth; Even those who speak well of him will be treated as a helpless man seeking favor.
