Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. క్వచి త్పృత్వీశయ్యః, క్వచి దపి చ పర్యగ్కశయనః,
క్వచి చ్ఛాకాహారః, క్వచి దపి చ శాల్యోదనరుచిః |
క్వచి త్కన్థాదారీ, క్వచి దపి చ దివ్యామ్బరధరో,
మనస్వీ కార్యార్థీ న గణయతి దుఃఖం న చ సుఖమ్ ||
తాత్పర్యం:
కార్యార్థి అయినవాడు సందర్భాన్ని బట్టి మెసలడంలో నేర్పరిగా ఉంటాడు. అతడు వీలునుబట్టి ఒకచోట భూశయనానికి అయినా సిద్ధపడతాడు. పరుపులపైన శయనించే అవకాశం ఉన్నప్పుడు, దానినీ వినియోగించుకుంటాడు. షడ్రషోపేతమైన భోజనం దొరికిందా సరేసరి ! లేదా కాయగూరలతోనే సరిపుచ్చుకుంటాడు. ఒకచోట పట్టుపీతాంబరాలను ధరించనూగలడు. వేరొకచోట బొంత గుడ్డనూ కుట్టుకోగలడు.

అయితే అన్నింటికంటే ముఖ్యంగా చెప్పుకోవలసింది – కష్టాలు కలిగాయని దుఃఖించడమో – సుఖాలు లభించాయని ఆనందించడమో ఉండదతనికి.

Meaning:
A man with conviction can take any situation in his stride, in course of his reaching the goal. He can sleep on a bare floor or on cushioned bed. He can eat a normal food or a great feast, equanimously. Riches clothes or poor garb will be considered the same.
