His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. నిన్దన్తు నీతినిపుణా, యది వా స్తువన్తు,
లక్ష్మీః సమావిశతు, గర్ఛతు వ యథేష్టమ్ |
అద్వైవ వా మరణ మస్తు, యుగాన్తరే వా
న్యాయ్యా త్పథః ప్రవచిల న్తి పదం న ధీరాః ||
తాత్పర్యం:
నీతివేత్తలైన వారిచేత పొగడబడినా, కొన్ని సందర్భాలలో వారి చేతనే విమర్శించబడినాధీరులు న్యాయమార్గాన్ని విడనాడరు. ఎందుకంటే …… వారికి తాము అనుసరిస్తున్నది న్యాయమార్గమనే స్పృహ ఉంది కనుక, అట్లే ఆపదలొచ్చినా – పోయినా ఆ క్షణమే ప్రాణం పోతున్నా – చాలాకాలం బ్రతికినా న్యాయం మాత్రం తప్పరు.

ప్రశంసలకు, విమర్శలకు, అల్పాయుష్షుకు, అధికాయుష్షుకు న్యాయమార్గానుసారం వర్తించేవారు లొంగరు. అదే వారి బలం.

Meaning:
A person with conviction does not leave his righteous path whether praised or criticized by people. Similarly they will not leave the right path even if he has to face death. Praise, censure, longevity or death – nothing deters them from their path.
