His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. ప్రియసఖ విపద్దణ్డాఘాత ప్రపాతపరమ్పరా
పరిచయ బలే చిన్తాచక్రే నిధాయ విధిః ఖలః |
మృదమివ బలా త్పిణ్డీకృత్య ప్రగల్భకులావ
ద్భ్రమయతి మనో, నో జానీమః కిమత్ర విధాస్యతి ||
తాత్పర్యం:
కుమ్మరి సారె కుండలు చేయడానికి మాత్రమే త్రిప్పుతాడు. కుమ్మరి వృథాగానో – వేరే కార్యం ఆశించో త్రిప్పడు కదా! ఈ కుమారిసారె లో ఉపయోగించే పదార్థం మట్టి ఒక్కటే ! ఇంకేమీ ఉండదు.

దీనితో పోలుస్తూ, కవి ఆ దైవాన్ని ఇలా నిందిస్తున్నాడు : మట్టితో కలిసే ఈ పార్థివ దేహాల్ని ( జీవుల్ని ) చెసే దైవం, వారిని ఈ సంసార చక్రం అనే కుమ్మరిసారె ద్వారా ఉత్పత్తి చేస్తున్నాడు. కాని వారికి ఆపదలు కల్పిమ్చి చింతల పాలు చెయ్యడం దేనికీ ? ఈ దైవమనే కుమ్మరి వ్య్వహారం అంతు బట్టకుండా ఉంది. ఈపాడు దైవాని కిదేబుద్ధి?

Dhbhramayathi Mano, No Jaaneemah Kimathra Vidhaasyathi ||
Meaning:
The Divine Lord, acts like a potter, making his pots called humans. He runs the wheel of their life. Then why does he put in difficulties and dangers in the course of the wheel? Alas! What is the intention of this fate in doing so?
