His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. పద్యం:
దైవేన ప్రభుణా స్వయం జగతి య ద్యస్య ప్రమాణీకృతం
తత్త స్యోపనమే స్మనా గపి మహాన్నైవా శ్రయః కారణమ్ |
సర్వాశాపరిపూరకే జలధరే వర్ష త్యపి ప్రత్యహం
సూక్ష్మా ఏవ పతన్తి చాతకముఖే ద్విత్రాః పయోబిన్దవః ||
తాత్పర్యం:
ఎవరికి ఏది ఎంత ప్రాప్తం అని దైవం నిర్ణయిస్తే, అది వారికి దానంతట అదే లభిస్తుంది. దీనికోసం ఎవరినీ యాచించనక్కరలేదు. ఆశ్రయించ నవసరం లేదు. అన్నివైపులా దట్టంగా వ్యాపించిన మేఘాలు నిరంతరం వర్షిస్తున్నా, నోరు తెరుచుకొని కూర్చున్న చాతకపక్షి నోట్లో కొద్దిగానైనా / రెండు చుక్కలు అయినా రాలకపోవు కదా ! అన్నిటికి ఆ దైవం ఎంత రాసిపెట్టి ఉంటే, అంత తప్పక అందుతుంది.

మనం మహా ఉదారుని ఆశ్రయించినా, మనకు ఎంత ప్రాప్తమని రాసివుంటే అంతే దక్కుతుంది. కనుక దైవకృప విస్తారంగా పొందడానికి ప్రయత్నం చేయాలి.

Thaththa Syopaname Smanaa Gapi Mahaannaivaa Shrayah Kaaranam |
Sarvaashaaparipoorake Jaladhare Varsha Thyapi Prathyaham
Sookshmaa Eva Pathanthi Chaathakamukhe Dhvithraah Payobindhavah ||
Meaning:
One gets what one is destined to get. One need not beg or seek it anyone else. While it rains heavily, whatever a chataka bird destined to drink, one or few drops of water, it will get! Even a generous man will give to a man, whatever he is destined to get.
